In this post, I’ll be giving a run-through on how developers can get jobs using Job Search on Google and how companies can get their jobs listed on Google’s Job Search portal.

About 3 months ago I had the opportunity of being an Ambassador at the Google for Nigeria event. My primary role was to talk to attendees of the event about new Google technologies and how they help our daily lives.

Being a developer, I know how hard it is to get jobs especially when you’re not a “senior developer”

Job Search on Google is basically a repository of jobs indexed by the Google web crawler (a job bank) from partner job listing platforms and other platforms alike.

All you need is your device (laptop, phone), internet connection and a web browser yes .. and it doesn’t have to be Chrome :)

In your web browser go to Google, and in the search bar input your preferred job search keyword. Your keyword might be “Web Developer jobs near me”, “Remote Software developer jobs in Canada”, “Senior DevOps Engineer Jobs in Lagos”, “Jobs in Google”.

Clicking on the link at the bottom of the box shows even more jobs that match your search terms. You can then filter using the advanced filter feature to narrow your search down based on job category, title, location, date posted and type of job (contract, full-time, part-time, internship).

Supposing Kunle is a web developer and is looking for a job around Ikeja where he lives, his search term could be something like this:

Kunle’s Job search term and available jobs meeting his specifications

Kunle can then proceed to filter the search result.

Another beautiful feature is the ability to bookmark jobs that meet your specification so you can access them at your convenience without having to search through the maze of jobs listed on the platform. You can access any bookmarked job by clicking on your “Saved Jobs” tab on Google.

The most amazing part is turning on email alerts for a specific type of search. The email alerts can be set to either instant, daily or weekly alerts and Google will then send an email notification when a new job that matches your requirements is listed.

Helping Your Company get their Job Indexed

Getting a job listed on the platform can be performed in two ways :

  1. Third party or partner job providing platforms.
  2. Integrating Google’s indexing API on your website.

Note that Google’s job search platform is not a job board but rather an aggregator — so there’s no way to actually post jobs on the platform. Instead, it scrapes and features job postings that are already published on partner websites.

So if you’ve posted your listings on a job board that has integrated the Google Indexing API on their website already — you’re okay. Your listings are now eligible to show up in Jobs Search on Google.

Integrating the API requires the technical know-how, and you might need assistance from a developer. Follow the guidelines Google laid out here to get your website set up to be indexed by the crawler.
