Having just returned from several months in Hawaii, I wanted my next mosaic art piece to reflect my observations of the undersea world.

My idea for this mosaic stepping stone was to portray the plant life of the sea floor. My intent was to capture the way the stems and fronds of sea grasses wave as they gracefully intertwine. The water currents sway the fronds. But the fronds also deflect the course of the currents. It is a dance between these two forces — one solid and alive; the other, a massive liquid universe that is alive in its own ineffable way.

I chose the background stone — Aegean Antique from Mosaic Art Supply — for its wide range of color variation. While the fronds tesserae I’ve cut to use the facing sides (from a variety of stones), I’ve cut the background tesserae to use the thinner facet (6mm).

This is the first of a set of five hexagonal stepping stones for our backyard thyme garden.
