Before getting married, I would move every 2–3 years. I started in Honolulu, moved to the Big Island, then moved overseas to China to learn Chinese.

When I was in China, I lived in Shanghai, China for 2 years for language study then moved to Guangzhou, China for university. During my university years, I traveled the east coast of China and visited some cities in the west.

After getting married, our family moved to Taipei, Taiwan and we began to settle down as a family. It’s the longest time I spent in one place in 18 years.

What I learned from the years of moving around is the importance of building a sense of community and belonging in the places I lived in.

But how do you create community? Creating community does not come naturally for everybody.

I will share from my experience 5 things needed to build community and 1 thing that brings them all together.

Invitation

There needs to be a call for community for community to happen. For every gathering of people, there will be a person and eventually a group of people who are gifted at calling for community.
