Heaven is broken, at least as it’s currently envisioned by many Christians around the world. We could look at any number of denominational creeds to see why. For instance, the National Baptist Convention declares that on judgment day “the wicked will be adjudged to endless punishment and the righteous to endless joy.”

If you’re a believer, this might sound terrific. “We will experience endless joy! What could be better than that?”

But there’s a catch. The average believer today likely knows and loves someone who doesn’t believe the same way they do. Perhaps it’s a son, a daughter, a father, a mother, a husband, a wife, an aunt, an uncle, a grandson, or a granddaughter, etc. Whoever it is, maybe they never believed in the first place. Or maybe they’ve left the tradition altogether.

It’s increasingly common. In the U.S. alone, for example, more than half of adults now no longer belong to a religious congregation. The numbers are especially high for young adults, and the numbers are only expected to go up as time goes on, with more people leaving rather than returning to traditional religion as they get older.
