I grew up in a denomination that took communion at every single church service. In fact, it was considered blasphemy not to take communion at every single church service.

Not only that, wherever you went in the country, the way that they did communion was exactly the same from church to church.

They used the same words, prayed the same prayers, and served up the same stuff, no matter where you were. It always consisted of a tiny little cup of non-alcoholic grape juice and a tiny piece of a water cracker.

Of course, that’s not what Jesus would have used when he shared the last supper with his disciples. He would have used an alcoholic wine, but gosh… we were Christians, and there is no way that we would sink to the same level as Jesus and consume alcohol when remembering Jesus — especially not in church. So, non-alcoholic grape juice it was. And the crackers? Well… crackers are just easier on the church budget than proper unleavened bread.

This was considered our sacred communion feast. And, you’d better believe that it was sacred. The rule of thumb when it came to communion was, “That’s how we’ve always done it, and we will not change it for anyone or anything.”
