Dear United States of America,

We need to have a chat. Actually, scratch that — we need to have a full-blown, intervention-style, sit-down discussion. I mean, seriously, what the heck? We just witnessed history in the most bizarre way possible: a former president, Donald Trump, was convicted on all 34 counts of falsifying business records to cover up an affair with Stormy Daniels.

No president has ever been found guilty of a crime until now, and yet, somehow, he’s still in the running for the 2024 election.

I mean, is there anyone in the Republican Party who is going to step up and say, “Hey… I don’t think this is a good idea!”

It seems not.

Republican politicians were quick to jump to Trump’s defense. According to the latest NPR/PBS NewsHour/Marist poll, two-thirds of registered Republican voters stated that a guilty verdict would not influence their voting decision.

It’s left me and the rest of the world wondering why.
