“God is dead!”

Friedrich Nietzsche turned over the tables of modern philosophical and theological thinkers when he declared one of the most profound and prophetic indictments ever uttered from the mouths of men when he wrote “God is dead!” in The Parable of the Madman in 1882.

Time Magazine followed up Nietzsche’s theme with its controversial cover article titled “Is God Dead?” on Friday, April 08, 1966, reintroducing and cementing Nietzsche’s declaration into modern pop culture infamy. The article recognized that we had crossed the point of no return on the bridge towards scientific discovery and away from God.

Bear in mind, the 1960s put men on the moon. Scientific discovery was unraveling the strings of life’s most profound mysteries, pulling the rug out from under our dependency on a now stale and aging idea of God for answers to existential questions. Within a few decades, the Christian God became a fashion faux pax within the scientific and University communities, with new generations embracing science as their new master.
