Did He Really Know His Audience?

A football player turned armchair theologian gives a graduation speech in which he mansplains to the women about to receive their degrees that they just wasted four years and tens of thousands of dollars pursuing higher education so they can have a career because they believed “diabolical lies.” All they really need is to find a man, get married, have children, sacrifice any career aspirations they have, and devote the rest of their lives to being a homemaker. The speech goes viral, and — surprise, surprise! — some people strongly disagree with him.

But not everyone disagrees. Soon after the speech went viral, Harrison Butker’s jersey outsold his more famous teammates’, Patrick Mahomes and Travis Kelce, for a time. Some praise and applaud him for defending traditional Christianity. One male student who was there said,

“I think the backlash is ridiculous; he was invited to speak at our small Catholic college where getting engaged/married right after college is a regular occurrence. He knew his audience and people on Instagram and X shouldn’t be mad about something they weren’t the target audience for.”

Well, in a way, he’s right.
