How Your Picture of God Defines Who You Are
The God You Create, Creates You
Huddled around a flannelgraph in a darkened corner of the church, I sat on the floor in a semi-circle with a bunch of other 6-year- olds in front of my Sunday school teacher. Her hair was pure white, and a pair of half-moon spectacles sat halfway down her rather prominent beak. Her gaze rolled down her nose through the glass semi-circles and landed on the children at her feet. She donned a pink, knitted cardigan and would lick her index finger immediately before attempting to turn the pages of the Bible she was reading.
She seemed as old as time itself and just as wise and learned. So, when she spoke about the creation of the world, we might have believed she was there and witnessed it all alongside God. Heck, she seemed old enough. She recounted the Biblical creation narrative from Genesis, skillfully holding the Bible in one hand and sticking felt shapes and figures on the flannelgraph with the other.
Day 1: Light
Day 2: Sky
Day 3: Land & plants
Day 4: Sun, moon, and stars. (As a six-year-old, you don’t ask questions like “Why did God create the Sun after he created plants?”)
Day 5: Birds and fish
