The church fellowship hall was silent except for the hum of the projector and the occasional sniffle from someone in the back row. The only light came from the flickering glow of the movie being cast onto the screen. It showed a young man, who had just bolted through the front door of his house, screaming for his mother.
But she was gone. So was his little brother.
The camera panned over their half-eaten dinner, steam still rising from plates that would never be touched again. A baby wailed from another room, left alone in its crib because its believing parents had been taken. Outside, car horns blared as driverless vehicles careened into traffic. News anchors, barely keeping it together, reported mass disappearances. And then…
The screen cut to the sky.
A plane, nosediving.
Oxygen masks dangled from the ceiling as passengers shrieked, clutching the arms of their seats. The cockpit was empty. The pilots — raptured.
The young man fell to his knees in the empty house, his whole body heaving with anguished sobs. He had heard the warnings before — his mother had pleaded…
