The Christian church is full of jerks.

I know this to be true because, for three and a half decades, I was one of them.

And while many would quite rightly accuse me of still having some jerk-like tendencies, at least I am not sitting in a church pretending that I’m not a jerk — not anymore.

I am owning my jerkiness.

Finally.

I have figured that this might be the first step towards actual growth — something that seemed either painfully slow or absent altogether from my time in church.

When evangelical preachers and would-be evangelists are trying to ‘sell’ Christianity to the reluctant, one of the key selling points is the phrase, “Jesus will change your life!”

I’m sure he can.

But that’s not what most churches are offering. Most churches are offering dogma, opinions, tribalism, self-serving doctrines, and, above all, the kind of performance-based religion that really got up Jesus’s nose — ironically enough.
