The Strangest ‘Gift’ My Wife Received During Cancer Treatment
Unsolicited Bible Verses and the Problem with Christian ‘Encouragement’
My wife just received a mystery package in the mail — express post, no less — as if it were a ticking time bomb of divine wisdom. Naturally, we were intrigued. Nobody sends anything express unless it’s urgent.
Who was sending urgent mail? A long-lost friend?
Was it a surprise gift? Some unexpected windfall? A letter containing urgent, life-altering news?
But when we opened it up, we were disappointed.
Then confused.
Inside was a framed, homemade poster. No note. No explanation. Just my wife’s name in big letters, followed by three cryptic phrases:
Bitter Grace. Faithfulness of God.
And beneath it, a Bible verse:
“Keep your lives free from the love of money, and be content with what you have; for he has said, ‘I will never leave you nor forsake you.’” — Hebrews 13:5
We stared at it, waiting for it to make sense.
It did not.
