Is the story of Abraham and Isaac literal, historical narrative?

Was God testing Abraham’s faith, by telling him to sacrifice his son, Isaac?

Does this story prove that God also expects us to do bizarre things to prove our faith in Him?

Genesis 22:1–18 seems to indicate that God did just that. But, did He? Was something else going on? Is religion, once again, mishandling the Scriptures to support their dogmas?

What was going on?

Fiery tongued preachers informed me that the story of Abraham and Isaac was literal historical narrative. Supposedly, God was painting a picture of Future Salvation. The ram caught in the thicket, as they told the story, was a forecast of Jesus being the offering for our sin.

The story, said they, was also an example of true faith and dedication to God. An example of absolute obedience that all TRUE believers will follow.
