It was the 5th of November when a particular conversation occurred at our meal table — one that every Father dreads. My then 6-year-old son looked pensive and thoughtful like he had something serious on his mind and a heavyweight upon his shoulders. Finally, he spoke up.

“Daddy,” he said, “The kids at school say that Santa Claus is just your Daddy being kind to you.”

Well, I fought back a rising panic. This, I wasn’t prepared for. Not yet. With my cover about to be blown and my two younger children both present, I had to think of something to say and quick. But I was a bit stumped. Then I remembered someone once told me that if you don’t know the answer, ask a question. And so I did.

“Well, Son,” I said, “What do you think about that?”

He thought about this for a moment and then replied… “Well, I think there’s no way you could be Santa Clause… you’d be waaaaay too tired and grumpy if you delivered all those presents in one night.”

Exactly.

Why didn’t I think of that? Thanks, son! My secret is safe for another year!
