Digital transformation is one of those terms you see used in a variety of ways, but at its core, digital transformation is about significantly adapting your business to ensure continuing relevance in our increasingly digitised world. It might be difficult to pinpoint a very exact definition, as digital transformation will look different for every organisation that undertakes it, but at its centre is not technology per se, but rather the way this new technology is implemented. Indeed, some would argue that digital transformation is primarily about changing attitudes and perceptions. With this in mind, for many organisations digital transformation means adopting things like certain agile principles alongside new technology for things like automation and cloud computing, and discarding outdated practices and technology.

Culture is key

Considering that digital transformation requires big changes to way companies work, it is something the entire team has to get involved with. This starts with getting employees comfortable with new technology, and the cultural changes that follow from it. This can be established through making education a key part of the employee experience, both by hosting talks and workshops from the management team and by encouraging peer-to-peer skill sharing. It’s important to also remember that digital transformation is an ongoing process, rather than a one-off project, so these kind of initiatives have to be planned with long-term goals in mind.

Why should I care?

If your organisation is very good at keeping your ear on the ground, anticipating changes in your sector, and is able to evolve quickly with your clients’ needs, good news — you probably won’t need to implement digital transformation. If, however, your team finds itself inundated with questions they don’t have answers to, or worse, don’t fully understand them, change may be due. Digital transformation is needed when evolving isn’t enough, as changing one or two aspects of your business is going to still leave you behind the competition.
