Medium’s New Tipping Feature EXPLAINED

So Medium has a tipping feature now.

I know what you’re thinking — “Who cares? It’s not like anybody reads my articles anyway. Why should I get any tips?”

To this, I say, “Shut up. You’re ruining the premise of my joke.”

So without wasting any more time on an introduction to a topic I admittedly know nothing about, here are 8 Reasons Why You Should Tip 20% Even If The Article Was Bad And Sloppily Researched:

  1. 20 is the funniest number there is.

Most of us are familiar with debates about the inherent comedic potential of different numbers. While some progressive voices make a strong case for 28, the received wisdom in the counting community is that either 19 or 21 most consistently elicit uncontrollable fits of laughter. But you’re all wrong and you all suck. 20 all the way.

2. It’s a nice gesture.

3. Rewarding sloppy research gives you more opportunities to refute the author in one of your own articles.

As we all know, the sole purpose of public debate is to beat the opponent and look smart to your loyal adoring fans. If you were to withhold a tip from an author for sloppy research, they might start investing more time in their articles, become more educated on the topic and be able to arrive at an informed opinion that ends up looking a lot more sensible than your own. UGH!

4. Can I be honest for a second? I have no idea what Medium’s new tipping feature actually is.

I only know about it because of a tweet by Liam M and I turned our conversation into a writing prompt of sorts, so here we are … thank you for the inspiration!

5. It’s better than tipping a cow.

Most of life’s big questions allow for a degree of uncertainty. Even if they look like “yes or no” questions on the surface, more often than not the real answer will turn out to be complex and come with a large amount of “exceptions to the rule”. Not so if the question is, “Should I tip that cow?” I grew up in the city so I can’t pretend to have first-hand knowledge of this phenomenon, but apparently, there are teenage delinquents in rural areas who think it’s a good idea to disturb an innocent cow’s slumber by tipping the poor animal over! It’s not known whether they tend to shout “It’s just a prank bro” right after completing the task, but either way the answer to the question “Should I tip that cow?” is always an unequivocal “no”. Tip your favorite Medium writers instead!

6. Couldn’t be bothered to write anything for this one lol

7. The writer will notice you and as a result, go to your page, read all of your stories, and make you rich.

Why do we writers do what we do? Why do we spend hours upon hours writing and rewriting stories instead of going outside and having a life? Is it because we love to entertain our fellow human beings? Is it because of our inherent love for the craft? Is it because we hope that maybe one day one of our stories will move somebody so much they decide to change the world? God no. We do it because we hope another Medium member will notice us on a day on which they are so bored that they can’t think of anything better to do than to read all of our articles. And tipping increases that chance, however slightly. It really is a beautiful thing.

And there you have it — 8 Reasons Why You Should Tip 20% Even If The Article Was Bad And Sloppily Researched. As I have not set up my own tipping feature yet, I still rely on that sweet read time to become a #BloggingBillionaire.
