The Most Unpleasant Aftereffects of Eating Out Have Been at Chinese Buffets
I love Chinese food. Is there something more to this that I’m not necessarily seeing immediately? Let’s find out.
I’m a big guy. That doesn’t mean that I necessarily eat a lot anymore, especially when I’m going out. I eat enough and eat until I’m full for the most part. At buffets, it seems that all bets are off. Even worse when those buffets are one of my favorite cuisines, American-style Chinese food.
Chinese-American food is very appetizing but my body doesn’t always agree with it
Yes, I do understand that there’s a difference between most of the Chinese food we get in America and at Panda Express and at buffets versus what they actually eat in Mainland China. I love eating egg rolls, lo mein, stuffed mushrooms, broccoli beef, and orange chicken. I know that some of that stuff is found in China but some of the stuff is seasoned and flavored for American tastes.
I really enjoy the food but I find that every time I’ve been to one of these places, there’s about a 10–25% chance that I’ll have somehow found myself queasy enough afterward to head to the bathroom to expel some or all of the food. The last time we went to a Chinese buffet, which was a while ago, I really didn’t take well to the buffet, even though I didn’t really feel like I ate a ton. Maybe I ate just enough of the delicious food for my body to just flat-out reject it.
Looking at some of the food in the cuisine I enjoy
I definitely don’t hate the food and certainly wouldn’t get stuffed from what would roughly be considered about two to three plates. I only ate what I thought would be easily digestible and I stayed away from the fried and breaded stuff for the most part. I think that was the food that used to do it for me in the past. I really like those Crab Rangoons with the cheese and crab that are fried.
One thing that I definitely don’t eat and always avoid when going to those places is pizza. I ate the “Chinese-American” version of pizza before at a buffet and it just has a certain aftertaste that I certainly don’t appreciate. I really don’t understand why these businesses, and it’s nearly all of them, offer pizza when it’s a Chinese buffet.
They also offer sushi, which I always eat, but I find it hilarious that most people don’t bat an eye since sushi is a Japanese creation. I’m sure that these businesses are about business and don’t really care if they get people to mix up these Asian cuisines as long as they get business and make money from the offering of a smorgasbord style of eating.
The pandemic has slowed it down for me personally and maybe the buffet style itself is causing my body to react that way
Many people still love this style of eating. The pandemic has definitely slowed it down for me and my partner. I can see why it’s still relatively popular though. You pay somewhere between 10–20 dollars for lunch and more for dinner and you get to gorge on as much food as you’d like.
Come to think of it, that’s probably why I throw up. It’s because they know the foods and combinations of what they offer are going to be more than enough for everyone to eat. If you’re daring enough to try nearly all of it or even a sampling of everything even if you don’t think it’ll be a lot, you’ll probably end up in the bathroom as I have.
The thing is, too, these places never or rarely offer refunds. Even if you have lost all of your food to the bathroom, you don’t get to take back the money you’ve already given them. You can, however, always go back and eat more but I don’t for the most part. I don’t even understand why I keep going back to these places over the years despite my experiences there. I guess I crave value and good food over my own body telling me no.
RELATED LESSON: I’ve pretty much retired the unrelated lesson from my previous stories at this point. It was good while it lasted. It was getting stale and I wanted to stay relevant and somewhat humorous. I just want to say that if you have health issues and those that are especially associated with diet such as diabetes, buffets are probably a very bad idea. I think that I must’ve been diabetic well before the doctors found out that I was. I may love Chinese-American food but it’s better enjoyed when eaten in moderation. I’ve had much better experiences eating the food when I go to a regular sit-down or take-out restaurant to order a combination or an a la carte meal. This has been another public health and public service announcement by the Sturg.
