The NPSL, National Premier Soccer League, announced the addition of Appalachian FC for the 2021 season. The club will play in Boone, NC, the home of Appalachian State University.

Expansion in the lower divisions of US soccer is always a good thing, but their badge is next level:

Appalachian FC’s new badge

The most striking feature of the badge might be the mascot: Big Foot or Sasquatch, a cryptid famous in the forested regions of North America. Appalachian FC is based in the mountains of western North Carolina, making Big Foot a perfect choice.

But beyond that are some key features that make this badge top notch.

The typeface is bold with angular cuts, evoking carved sign posts on mountain trails. The black and gold colors are striking and draw a connection to Appalachian State in town.

The oval is a classic badge shape, and they fill the space well with the tall mascot and full team lettering above and below. The space between “Appalachian” and “Football Club” is filled with evergreen trees, another tribute to the forests in their region.

Overall, a top-notch badge for a league that has some questionable entries. Hats off to the team at Appalachian FC!
