Public Security Chief meets ambassadors, heads of missions in Geneva

Geneva, Jun. 21. (BNA) — Chief of Public Security Major-General Tariq Al Hassan held here, in the presence of the Head of Bahrain’s Permanent Mission to the United Nations, a series of meetings with ambassadors and heads of missions of the USA, Canada, Sweden, Japan, Australia, South Korea, the UK and others.

The meetings were held 26th Session of the Human Rights Council of the United Nations, with the participation of an Interior Ministry’s delegation.

The Public Security Chief provided information on various issues in the Kingdom of Bahrain, including the reform project spearheaded by His Majesty King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa, the enforcement of human rights and the protection of the freedom of expression.

He also outlined the development and modernization strategy of the Interior Ministry, based on the Interior Minister Lieutenant-General Shaikh Rashid bin Abdullah Al Khalifa’s vision to adopt the consolidation of community partnerships as the basis for boosting the police sector and provide the best services that meet the aspirations of HM the King..

He detailed the main reforms within the Ministry, such as the establishment of the Secretariat-General of the Ombudsman, the Commission of the Rights of Prisoners and Detainees, holding officers and policemen to take part in a number of training sessions on human rights inside and outside the kingdom and developing the ministry’s human resources through allowing them to continue higher education at the most prestigious world universities and institutes.

He stressed the importance of building a partnership with all segments of the community and reviewed many programs and initiatives in this regard.

Major-General Al-Hassan discussed the role of women police, being part of the Ministry since 1970, and stressed the efforts made by the Interior Ministry to use modern technology to provide the best police service possible and ensure that best practices in law enforcement and human rights are adhered to.

He also gave a thorough briefing on cases in Bahrain involving foreign interference, extremism and terrorism, shedding special light on the exploitation of children who are encouraged to participate in illegal activities including violence and unprovoked attacks on police.

The Chief provided an array of statistics to give an overall picture of the progress that the Ministry has made in reducing violence. He then provided details on unprovoked attacks on police and the injuries to policemen and women.

The audience expressed appreciation to the Public Security Chief for his keenness to meet them and interact with them.

They voiced support for the progress made on reforms and encouraged continuous international cooperation. They also condemned the street violence in Bahrain and expressed support for policemen and women in Bahrain.

The delegation accompanying the Public Security Chief included the Assistant Undersecretary for Legal Affairs and the Director of the Joint Counter-terrorism Center at the Interior Ministry.
