Our Amsterdam office keeps growing. Meet Valerie Steenhaut, our new Art Director.

Valerie comes to us from creative studio Folch and most recently, the young architecture studio MESURA, both based in Barcelona. After studying literature in her motherland Belgium, she turned to Art Direction while writing on the side for publications like Screenshot, Vice and Park Magazine. She also worked for the cultural membership Subbacultcha and interdisciplinary arts festival LOOM.

During the quarantine, Valerie has come to realise that most of her free time is usually spent visiting restaurants and bars with friends and family, and that she misses the close encounters with the strangers she meets in the process. The quarantine taught her to enjoy more quiet times at home, where she tends to surround herself with piles of books — many of which are left unfinished, as she tries to perfectly remember every word of them.

As a tribute to this accumulation of open endings, Valerie shares some of the books she has piled up in relation to her first month working at BB:

  1. Manifestly Haraway: 37 (Posthumanities)
    by Donna J. Haraway
  2. Thinking in Systems
    by Donella Meadows
  3. Gender Trouble: Feminism and the Subversion of Identity
    by Judith Butler
  4. The Left Hand of Darkness
    by Ursula K. Le Guin
  5. The Great Indoors: The Surprising Science of How Buildings Shape
    Our Behavior, Health, and Happiness
    by Emily Anthes
  6. Black Transparency — The Right to Know in the Age of Mass Surveillance
    by Metahaven
  7. The Age of Surveillance Capitalism.
The Fight for a Human Future at the New Frontier of Power

    by Shoshana Zuboff
