What is it?

Psyllium seed is the name for the seeds from the plant genus Plantago, which is actually 200 different species of plants. Once a year, the seeds are harvested, and then ground for their husks .

Why does Balanced Blends use it?

Balanced Blends uses psyllium seed husk as a carrier to ensure an even mix of supplements in our foods. What does that mean? Well, if you’ve ever baked anything with dry ingredients you know that when you turn on the mixer, you sometimes end up with flour and baking soda on the floor, your apron, the counter, etc. This is not an ideal situation with a premix for pet food — the ingredients are carefully measured to ensure our pets are getting exactly the nutrients they need. To avoid the dusting of ingredients, psyllium seed husk is added to the mixture to help everything adhere better.

What are its other uses?

Humans:

For humans, psyllium seed husk is typically known as a fiber source found in substances like Metamucil.

Pets:

For pets, it can help with diarrhea *or* constipation. In the case of diarrhea, it adheres to water to slow elimination, and for constipation, it increases the level of fiber, which absorbs water and helps your pet poop.

Where is it sourced?

Psyllium seed husk is mainly grown in India.

Any issues with its use?

Both constipation and diarrhea are symptoms of irritable bowel disease (IBD). Since psyllium seed husk helps with both of these symptoms, it could possibly mask a case of IBD. We use the smallest amount possible to ensure a good blend while avoiding masking IBD.
