Bed games or head games?

A poem about head games in the bed. This loving couple has been married for several decades. Some nights instead of watching the news or regular television shows they opt to go for walks, rides, or play cards or board games.

Don’t you walk out on me

Why can’t you see

You must stay anyway

I promise not to play

With your heart your mind

I mean it this time

Just don’t leave me tonight

You always take flight

Once when love was new

I was deeply into you

Crimson passion I’d pursue

Your love was that way too

We rode the waves

Extended our days

Kept our hearts sure

Sweet tender and pure

The secrets we’re sharing

Together and caring

Don’t leave me. Stay

Let’s not end it this way

We have much more to do

Wasn’t I always here for you?

Your heart truly belongs to me

Look at us and you can see

Highs and lows ups and downs

Laughter tears smiles and frowns

Yet we made it work every time

You proved to me that you are mine

Don’t drive off heated in ire

Crimson tears bleeding fire

We say things we don’t mean

Saying things to which we cling

Sorry is just another word

We promised it’s all been heard

We’re too old to be fighting still

Look at us. We’re over the hill

Go back to bed. Lie down and rest

You’ll apologize. I’ll accept at best

So many times, we have been here

It's beginning anew, but it’s so dear

You always get mad when you lose

And you always change the rules

Come on, put the game away

This happens every time we play

“Okay”, you repeat, “not another word.”

I smile and say “Oh, that, I never heard.”

Why do we end up fighting in bed

Wherever we play “He Said, She Said”?

This particular night they decide to play the game “He Said She Said.” Now, this is a game that has over the years caused them to adamantly disagree to the point of breaking up. Often bringing up unresolved issues that cause one or the other anger or sadness. It is unbelievable how angry they get over made-up riff-raff. Although they fight and disagree, over almost nothing, they end up remaining together.
