Re-introducing: Scar Tissue

Just in time for the New Year, the second season draft of my web serial novel, Scar Tissue is done!

A little background info: Scar Tissue was originally called Trigger Warnings. I changed the title for many reasons, chiefly among them being dissociating from Neil Gaiman’s Trigger Warning short story collection (lest I be accused of attempting to ride the coattails off a more successful writer or worse trying to trick people into reading my stuff). I put the first “season” of TW (now ST) on Scribd and when I’m done making the edits season 2 will be up on Scribd as well. For now, I took season 1 down to make edits, but that will go back up in full when I’m done and under the new title.

Scar Tissue is about a young woman named Amanda suffering from compulsive self-harm catalyzed by a traumatic event in her life. Season 1 explored her life as a fledgling academic amid her rituals and anxiety. Season 2 will continued that exploration, as well as chronicle her descent into self-destruction. No, it won’t be a pleasant read, but as I’ve established, I’m not one to make my audience comfortable while they’re reading. And just by re-reading the draft, I can guarantee that season 2 will make you twice as squirmy as season 1.

Speaking of which, why seasons and episodes instead of parts and chapters? Good question! There’s not much to that, really. Since this is a web serial project, not a true-to-form book or novel, I don’t think the terms “parts” or “chapters” fit. To me, ST feels more like its structured as a TV show would be: a season with weekly episodes rather than a chunk all at once.

I don’t have a particular goal or plan with this web serial except to write and share it with people. If anything, I want to tell a story about a young woman coping with trauma. It’s not autobiographical, but a lot of personal experience and knowledge goes into writing this — more than I realize sometimes.

Anyway — give me a week and a bit to edit both seasons (things change over the evolution of the project which requires tweaking to previous episodes), and I’ll have them up!

Happy new year!
