Concert Review: Awakenings NYC
Dutch festival rouses restless techno fans from around the globe.
This past Valentine’s Day, Awakenings NYC touched down in New York, NY for the first time ever. It took place in the absolutely gorgeous Hammerstein Ballroom and featured an all-star cast of DJs that included Adam Beyer, Ida Engberg, Pan-Pot, Nicole Moudaber, Victor Calderone, Kamran Sadeghi and Julia Govor.
NYC locals and up-and-coming DJs Kamran Sadeghi and Julia Govor warmed up the room with a killer back-to-back set, followed shortly thereafter by our favorite DJ set of the night by Pan-Pot from midnight until 2 am. The Berlin locals effortlessly played with the tension in the room, taking revelers on a soaring journey throughout their set. We might have teared up a little bit.
Nicole Moudaber and Victor Calderone were up next with the second back-to-back set of the night, communicating wordlessly and effortlessly both with each other and the sweaty, palpitating crowd.
After Nicole and Victor’s banging two-hour set came to a close, the Valentine’s Day lovebirds and husband-and-wife DJ duo Adam Beyer and Ida Engberg took to the stage to close out the one-day festival from 4 am to 6 am. While the NYC iteration of Awakenings didn’t quite capture the energy of the original Dutch festival that takes place in Gashouder in Amsterdam every year, it did lay down a spectacular foundation for what we hope will be many more Awakenings showings in the USA. We seriously can’t wait for the next one!
