As a graphic designer and communications consultant that specializes in working with community-focused organizations and individuals across the country, I get to partner with some truly amazing organizations and individuals on so much impactful work. 2018 was a great year for Banjo Creative. Here’s a selection of some of my favorite community-focused design projects of the year.

Public Health Department of the Unified Government of Wyandotte County and Kansas City, Kansas

The Public Health Department of the Unified Government of Wyandotte County and Kansas City, KS works to improve health in Wyandotte County through its many services, from vaccines and family planning to community initiatives.

Tuberculosis Awareness Campaign

I was contracted by the health department to work on educational materials on tuberculosis awareness in response to high tuberculosis rates being seen in the Burmese community in Kansas City, Kansas. Health specialists partnered with local-area Burmese churches to identify their specific needs and questions, and they found that educational brochures and posters would be the most effective way to reach congregation members.

Community Health Improvement Plan

In September of 2018, the Unified Government released their Community Health Improvement Plan (CHIP). The CHIP is a long-term, systematic effort to address public health problems in Wyandotte County involving many community partners and organizations.

I designed a longer version with the full text targeted to community leaders and government agencies, as well as a shortened, more accessible version that was tailored for all Wyandotte County residents.

BikeWalkKC

BikeWalkKC is a Kansas City non-profit organization that “works to make Greater Kansas City a safer and more accessible place to walk, bicycle, live, work, and play.” From education programs for kids and adults to advocacy efforts to make it safer for people to walk and bike, BikeWalkKC does a lot of impactful work in the community.

BCycle Educational Materials

Kansas City BCycle launched a new program to make it easier for all people to use the bike sharing system, especially those from lower-income households and those without credit cards. I designed materials in both Spanish and English to let individuals know how to use the system. These materials were distributed by local partner organizations, including Hope Faith Ministries, Metro Lutheran Housing, Westside Housing Authority, and MainCor.

Healthy Communities Wyandotte

Healthy Communities Wyandotte works to “mobilize the community to improve health and well-being in Wyandotte County through increased coordination, communication, and culture change.”

Beat the Pack/KCKHA Materials

Kansas City Kansas Housing Authority (KCKHA) properties went smoke-free in 2018, and they were in need of materials to inform residents of the changes. I partnered with KCKHA and Healthy Communities Wyandotte to create signage, postcards, and doorhangers communicating the change in policy. I also created materials for their Beat the Pack program, a free, peer-led smoking cessation program available to residents to help them quit.

Client Melinda Linnell, director of housing management at the KCK Housing Authority, poses with one of the signs designed and placed at all housing authority sites.

Vision Zero Network

The Vision Zero Network “helps communities reach their goals of Vision Zero — eliminating all traffic fatalities and severe injuries — while increasing safe, healthy, equitable mobility for all.” The Vision Zero Network provides resources, feedback, and networking opportunities for city leaders interested in implementing Vision Zero policies in their communities.

Core Elements for Vision Zero Communities

In the fall of 2018, Vision Zero Network leaders wrote a new guide to help leaders “focus their commitments and actions on the most significant and proven areas of change to advance safe mobility.” I was tasked with designing the resource in a way that would be engaging, as well as easy-to-understand for a variety of audiences.

See the full resource on the Vision Zero Network website.

Georgia Bikes

Georgia Bikes is the statewide advocacy organization whose goal is to “improve bicycling conditions and promote bicycling throughout the state of Georgia.”

Tween’s Guide to Bicycling

In addition to creating a “Bicyclist Pocket Guide” focused on bicyclist rights and rules and safety for the bicycle advocacy organization, I designed a booklet educating older children, or tweens, about bicycle safety and rules of the road.

Solarhood

Solarhood, an initiative of Black & Veatch, provides home and business owners with free solar assessments and connects them with top-tier local installers to help people save money & go green. I regularly collaborate with Solarhood team members in creating content for web, e-mail campaigns, social media, and managing all graphic needs.
