The fact is, we all need a place to call home. But finding and buying the right home isn’t as easy as pie. There are many things to consider, like how much house can you afford? What kind of neighbourhood do you see yourself living in? How many square metres do you need to match your family size?

And the list goes on, which is why we’re taking you on Nadia and Hussam’s home-buying journey in the hope that it will help you on yours.

Nadia and Hussam are like any young married couple. When they moved into their first home, it seemed big enough. So big, it felt like a palace. But, over the years, their family started to grow, and the walls started to close in on them! Their 2 children were growing up so fast that they couldn’t deny it any longer. They had outgrown their house and needed to search for a new one that would fit them and their very playful kids.

To turn their dream into a reality, they realised they had to take a close look at their spending habits and work with their budget — not against it. After all, there were other costs to consider. Food, clothing, and utilities, just to name a few.

Once they had a better picture of their spending habits, Nadia and Hussam determined how much they could allocate toward their monthly mortgage payments and began their search.

Naturally, there were ups and downs as they were shopping around. One home felt very cosy but had 2 bedrooms. With a third child on the way, they knew they couldn’t make that kind of compromise. Another home looked just like it came straight out of Architectural Digest but was too far from their children’s school. So, the search had to go on.

Eventually, after what felt like dozens of homes later, they found the one that ticked all the boxes. Its location was prime, and its interior was modern. Plus, it had a backyard, so no more football matches in the kitchen!

But before they started negotiating the home’s price, Nadia and Hussam knew it would be good to get an expert to inspect the home. Once they double-checked there were no leaky roofs or crumbly walls, the price negotiation began.
