It’s been awhile but we’re back!

What’s ACM been up to???

Well, in short, a lot! Our SIGs have been working hard all semester on new innovative projects and ACM as a whole has welcomed many new members.

ACM Open House

ACM Fall Open House Sponsored by Microsoft

We started off with a bang by filling up the entirety of the 1404 lecture hall for ACM Fall Open House Sponsored by Microsoft! We welcomed new and old members to listen about the exciting visions each SIG had for themselves for the upcoming year. For example, SIGMusic spoke about previous and new projects such as TweetBeat and Chroma. If you’re interested in learning more about any part of ACM take a look at the presentation that we shared here. Personally, as a completely frazzled and confused freshman, Open House was a great place to pick which opportunity, out of the plethora that ACM provides, sounded the most interesting to myself.

Freshman Mentorship Program

Women in CS and ACM came together to create a program to connect new students to info, advice, and upperclassmen. Each student that signed up was connected to an seasoned ACM member and that’s where the magic began!

Palantir Interview Workshops

The Palantir Interview Workshops were tailored to help students prepare for upcoming career fairs by providing them with opportunities to practice their interview skills. The series of workshops focused on resumes, career fairs, and how to approach/solve technical questions. Feel free to look through the material covered: Resume Building, Getting the Interview, Basic Data Structures, Stacks and Queues.

ACM Clothing Drive

ACM hosted a clothing drive from November 1st through November 15th to donate to Salt and Light Ministry, a local charity that fights poverty in the Champaign-Urbana community. And, it was a success! We collected a total of 20 boxes, 8 bags, and 2 full bins to donate this winter!

Special shoutout to ACM Reflections | Projections Conference, CS at ILLINOIS Sail, Women in Computer Science UIUC, Founders — Illinois Entrepreneurs, and CS196 for graciously donating their t-shirts for the cause.

ACM Projects

ACM Projects have been working on three major projects this semester including Arbor, Twilight, and Groot.

Arbor is a statically configured framework for creating API Gateways. It provides the following capabilities: Easy registration of services, basic application authorization and request sanitization, proxying API calls, managing inter-service communication. Arbor has reached version 0.2.4 and you can take a look yourself here.

Twilight, summarized in an earlier blog, has a working prototype with custom control board and self organizing behavior. Watch our demo!

Finally, the ACM GPU Cluster is almost online!

Exciting SIG Highlight!

SIGBOT has been working on an underwater robot to participate in the RoboSub competition this summer. They’re designing and programming submarines that will compete in a set of sensing and manipulation tasks versus other schools from around the country and the world. They do they’re programming with ROS, design circuit boards and mechanical systems. They will be bringing their sub to San Diego this July to compete! SIGBot is always looking to work with companies so please reach out to us to connect!

Thanks!

As this semester is wrapping up, we are already planning on our upcoming Spring Open House. Also, as always, our SIGs are cooking up plans for next semester so stay tuned for our next update!
