As more investigations by the FBI are starting to come out against college basketball, so is the idea of player getting payed. The main reason for the investigation is the coaches and major companies involved with the schools, like Nike, and Adidas, are paying the players money, to come play for the team and there brand. With money now playing a major factor in the decision to clear players to play, the question has been asked if college athletes should be paid. Former players and coaches have weighted in on the topic. Former UCONN basketball player Shabazz Napier spoke on the topic. He said, “We do have hungry nights that we don’t have enough money to get food in. Sometimes money is needed. I don’t think you should stretch it out to hundreds of thousands of dollars for playing, because a lot of guys don’t know how to handle themselves with money.” He brings up a good point that the students would most likely handle the money poorly. Also not paying the athletes as much would work to the schools and students advantage. Another former athlete turned author, Malcolm Lemmons wrote about the advantages and disadvantages about paying student-athletes. He says the players could support there families, the corruption from big name brands would stop, they deserve it, and players would stay longer than they already do. He also says that the students would have financial irresponsibility, unfair payment to each player, athletes may never go to class, and it removes the players passion for the game. In my opinion, student-athletes should be paid, but not to much money, to avoid the financial irresponsibility that could follow them around for the rest of there lives.
