The Brooklyn Nets’ hiring of Steve Nash last month to be their next head coach seemed to come out of nowhere, prompting many to wonder why Nash was able to preempt the usual steps it takes to become the bench leader of an NBA franchise. Many years as an assistant coach or experience in scouting or the front office are usually good things to put on a resume before getting interviews to lead a team for the first time.

I don’t want to get into the semantics, rumors, or possible racial implications of the hiring, as that has already been covered in great detail by most basketball media outlets. All I know is that I think the Phoenix Suns’ legend has plenty of pedigree in his playing career to have the smarts and leadership qualities that will translate to coaching a team.

We all know the accolades. Nash was an eight-time All-Star and was twice named the league’s MVP. He was the captain of Mike D’Antoni’s revolutionary fast-break offense, dubbed “Seven Seconds or Less”, and a precursor to some of the best point guards playing the game right now. Perhaps you could call him a less aggressive Steph Curry.

Players with these types of playing careers have had a tough time transitioning to coaching. Whether it be that they cannot dumb down their knowledge to match…
