Fiona Apple

You know, there are these individuals whose effortless look has always been dazzling to us. Their raw energy attracts us and their “I don’t give a shit” attitude makes them all that more attractive in our eyes. Unapologetic, these individuals seen as twisted, sometimes perceived as cold by the crowd have the most beautiful souls which transcend to the way they carry themselves which eventually translates to the way they dress. An outfit can say so much about your personality, regardless of whether you choose to acknowledge that fact or not. Silk slip dresses, crop tops, baggy jeans and messy hair might just as well be worn by anyone, but no one could make them look disturbingly chic and beautiful, like Fiona Apple did back in the 90s. Her looks were crazy, daring, funky, all over the place, messy but nevertheless unique and raw and in a world where everything seems to become so boring, we applaud women whose ability to bend the rules makes the world, oh so fun.

So today we celebrate this poetic fashion icon, a woman whose lyrics will probably be remembered as some of the greatest poetry ever written. They inspire, make you cry, laugh and sometimes can make you feel a bit manic, but what they are never short of is evoking strong emotions and that is so rare to see these days.

Back in the late nineties, Fiona Apple was a walking embodiment of the post-grunge girl with her messy hair and minimalistic style and make up, but she was much more than that. Her voice represented the misfits of this society telling them that it’s perfectly fine to be different, as long as you accept and love yourself.

She sang about lost loves, relationships that can take a toll on your being, but she mostly sang about how to come to terms with who you are, how to endure that loss and how alone doesn’t by default equal lonely. And we love her for it.

Since today’s her birthday, we dedicate this post to the queen she was, is and will always be in our hearts. She never looked like a real fashionista, never found herself on the best dressed lists, but every one of her outfits tells a unique story if you dare to look at it closer.
