FACT: In 2006, an Australian man sold New Zealand on eBay.

The price rose to $3,000 before eBay shut down.

BELIEVE IT OR NOT!

Some of the strangest things ever sold on eBay.

STRANGE AUCTION:

DATE: May 2006

ITEM: New Zealand

STARTING BID: $0.01 AUD

SOLD?/ENDING BID: No; violation.

SUMMARY: A citizen of Autralia attempted to sell the country of New Zealand in May 2006. The bid had reached $3000 before it was taken down due to a violation of eBay’s policy. I guess you can’t sell a country without the consent of its people.

STORY: A prankster in Brisbane put New Zealand up for sale on eBay, the online auction site.

Brisk bidding saw the price quickly climb from just one Australian cent to A$3,000 (£1,230), until eBay managers pulled the auction from the website.

“Clearly New Zealand is not for sale.” Daniel Feiler, eBay Australia.

An angry Winston Peters, Wellington’s foreign minister, said:

“I don’t think it’s funny. It is nonsensical stupidity.”
