Dax Tee and Alex Artillero from Altitude Games

In our Meet the Devs series, we’ll feature interviews of the Battle Racers team — our game artists, engineers, designers, and more. Today, let’s meet two of our 2D artists — Dax Tee and Alex Artillero.

Who we’re meeting today:

  • Dax Tee, UI Artist/Marketing Artist — 4 years in game industry
  • Alex Artillero, UI/UX Artist — 3 years in game industry

What do you do on the team?

Dax: I make art for majority of the UI. It’s an end to end task — screen studies and mockups based on the design team’s UX flow. Iterate on selected art direction for the game’s UI until we lock it down. Execute in Unity or whatever platform is required. Animate UI elements for transition and interactive feedback. Test for bugs.

For self-published games, I’m involved in creating any marketing materials we’ll need such as press kits and digital assets for the stores.

Alex: I design in-game menus and do front-end work on our website.

What other games have you worked on?

Dax: Zodiac Pop, Holy Ship, a couple of Xeleb Games, and Kung Fu Clicker

Alex: Grand Chase PH, Ragnarok Online PH

Did you play in arcades growing up? How do you remember your experiences in the arcade?

Street Fighter 2 (from Wikipedia, fair use)

Dax: Yeah. We used to open and close the arcades back in high school. Street Fighter 2, King of Fighters and several Neo Geo SNK titles were our games.

Alex: I did! Was a big part of my childhood. I used to commute around Manila with friends just to check out various arcades and try new games.

What’s your favorite game, or what game made you want to be a game developer?

Nine Hours, Nine Persons, Nine Doors (from Wikipedia, fair use)

Dax: King of Fighters 97 from the arcades. Right now it’s Dragonball Fighterz for the PC.

I would say the KOF series made me want to make a fighting game. M.U.G.E.N came out and I attempted to put together Aya Brea from Parasite Eve. Never finished it.

Plants Vs Zombies would the next game to make me want to get into video game development. It was so simple but it hooked me. Of course, now I know it’s not as simple as it looked. Hahaha.

Alex: Favorite game would be Resident Evil 2; Nine Hours, Nine Persons, Nine Doors made me want to be a game developer.

What excites you most about Battle Racers?

Dax: It’s the customization!!! How limitless the content could be. I used to put together my own battle car with Lego and ram it into another flimsy battle car I also put together hahaha!

Alex: Besides being the first game I’ve ever worked on from the ground up, am personally a big fan of miniature cars so going online and racing with my own against other people excites me as hell.

If you were a car, which brand and model would you be and why?

Dax: I’d be a 2008 Honda Civic. It’s a very nice car to drive. Not too big and not too small. Classy. And it got me from the moment I saw the digital dashboard display!

Alex: A red Mazda Roadster; am light, I run fast, and don’t cost much =)) Also I wear red a LOT.
