On June 20th, we ran Battlesnake at Communitech: Stay Home in Code, presented by TD.

It was a fantastic event that brought 250 developers together to compete in three Divisions: Student, Rookie, and Veteran. Developers from across Canada joined the live competition on Twitch to cheer and see which Battlesnake would take the Champion title in each division.

First, the Student Division is always one of our favourites to watch as new Battlesnake Developers compete for the first time they bring new and creative ideas to how they develop their Battlesnake. It is always filled with unexpected outcomes and makes for an amazing showcase of creativity and ingenuity. Throughout the competition, a few names began to stand out right: Rubellanguis, fred2020, 𝛑-thon, Albatross and Blue Whale quickly became crowd favourites as they moved to the semi-finals. Unfortunately, only three could make it to the finals, Rubellanguis, fred2020 and Albatross. These three Battlesnakes, all new competitors, competed fiercely over three rounds for the championship, and in the end, Rubellanguis was able to seal their victory and become the Student Champion!

After finishing up the Student Division, we went straight into the Rookies. With teams coming in for the first time and a few repeat competitors, it was an exciting match up of new ideas with some old tried and true methods of Battlesnake strategy. Quickly standing out through the preliminaries were newcomers Lil Battlesnake, Istari, Scattered Dots, and Stabback, who joined repeat competitors, Ravioli, Nessegrev and WhitishMeteors. Only three were able to slither past the competition and make it to the finals, Istari, Scattered Dots, and Ravioli. After three exciting and nail-biting games, Ravioli was able to push out Istari and Scattered Dots to synch up the Rookie championship.

With the Rookie and Student Divisions wrapped up, we moved into the Veteran Division. This is where the competition gets fierce! With teams working on Battlesnakes over multiple years and competitions, it is always amazing to see the level of skill and strategy that goes into the development of the Battlesnakes that compete at this level.

Entering into the first round the favourites to take home the championship, Swedish Vikings, huntail, and Secret Snake, all heavy hitters with a track record of wins, championships, and dominating the Global Arena. After the preliminaries, we saw these three joined in the quarter-finals by other crowd favourites, Asymptotic Labs, Ahn Solo, BirdSnakers, Team Positive and ZeroCool. After three fierce rounds, Asymptotic Labs, Swedish Vikings, and huntail moved into the finals to see who would win it all.

Asymptotic labs are a relatively new team, and our only ML Battlesnake to make it into the finals. Swedish Vikings have been dominating the Global Arena since joining the Battlesnake Community and had a strong showing in both the Winter Classic and Stay Home and Code competitions. And huntail, the Stay Home and Code champion, looking to add another championship to their record. With $1000 and bragging rights on the line, these three teams gave it their all to secure victory. In the end, it was Asymptotic Labs with their ML Battlesnake that was able to overcome Swedish Vikings and huntail in the final to become the Veteran Champion.

Congratulations to all participants for an amazing showing at the Battlesnake at Communitech competition. We can’t wait to see you at our next competition!

Thank you to Communitech and TD for putting on a marvellous competition.
