The decision to kick off your professional life with a startup or with a corporate is never an easy one. Being a newbie in the field, how could you know which is the right one for you? This decision will be the basis of building your whole career, your personality, your skill set, and many more things.

Starting with a startup or with a corporate depends on your preferences, interests, and career goals. Being a Software Engineer myself, I started with startups and felt great benefits. There are many positives I have experienced that persuaded me to say that startup is the best place to start your career with.

Working at a startup company can seem intimidating at first. However, employees enjoy several career-building and personal benefits when working with these new brands in making.

1. Improved skill set:

The most important thing in your professional life is the skill set you have, and I must say a startup is the best place fordeveloping both your soft and technical skills. Startups work with the latest technologies, build things from scratch and implement the latest trends in the industry. There is a lot of room to learn things in a startup culture because there is no predefined set of rules and you can bring your ideas and work on them.

2. Personal development:

By working in an environment where you have to be patient, work with determination and ownership, be ready for any setbacks, learn from them, and develop strategies to recover from them, you experience a lot of personal growth. You learn decision-making, learn to handle difficult situations, practice empathy, and many other soft skills by working in a collaborative and fast-paced environment that will help you in your personal as well as professional life.

3. Building from scratch:

The best part that will be a great addition to shaping your professional growth is that you are a part of a process to build a brand from scratch. You will be solving the problems that are not already being solved, you will be a part of end-to-end deliveries and get a chance to understand the whole business.

4. Flat hierarchy:

Startups operate on a flat structure where everyone is easily accessible to others. Startups are usually comprised of a small team in the beginning. Employees can have direct access to the higher management with many of the middle management layers eliminated. This allows you to quickly make decisions and be open to discussing anything with anyone directly without anyone else involved. You will get the freedom to communicate directly on ideas and projects.

5. Impact and Recognition:

As a startup comprises of small teams, there is a lot more visibility and impact of your work than corporate. On-time recognition and clear visibility of your contributions develop job satisfaction and a sense of ownership which will boost your productivity and increase your desire to put more effort, resulting in remarkable job performance.

6. You are the in-charge:

In a corporate everything is moved by predefined processes where you need to follow certain rules, on the other hand in startups you are in charge of your own work. You will get the freedom to bring your ideas to life, develop your processes, take the lead and get things done.

6. The Amazing culture:

Culture is built by people and startups are all about people. Startups provide an exciting and amazing work culture through an informal and non-traditional work environment. As they are less structured, the team is easily bonded together and experience both the ups and downs together. There are little celebrations, a relaxed dress code, games, team building activities, and non-traditional office set-ups.

7. Growth:

A startup is a brand in making, so it plans to expand rapidly. As the business expands you will get great opportunities to move to higher roles as they need rapid change. Apart from this, you will experience a diversity of responsibilities as there are limited resources, resulting in an improved skill set.

There is a lot more than these, but collectively they will develop you as a professional in the early stages of your career who will be ahead of the curve. However, there are both, great startups and corporates, and terrible startups and corporates. When making the big decision do your research first, then dive in according to your preference because ultimately the choice is yours.
