About Air Pollution and Its Effects
Air pollution can be defined as the presence of toxic chemicals or compounds (including those of biological origin) in the air, at levels that pose a health risk. In an even broader sense, air pollution means the presence of chemicals or compounds in the air which are usually not present and which lower the quality of the air or cause detrimental changes to the quality of life (such as the damaging of the ozone layer or causing global warming).[1]
Air pollution risks the environment we live in and it is a serious problem especially in this century and it became a threat to civilization. As an example; in Shanghai, according to the Shanghai Daily, approximately 35 percent of days during the first three months of 2013 were considered slightly or very hazardous to health. In October 2013, the World Health Organization (WHO) officially classified air pollution and particulate matter as level Group 1 human carcinogen (cancer-causing), the same level as tobacco.[2]
About Our Research
In this study, we would like to make a research about predicting air pollution level by taking advantage of machine learning algorithms and other researches made before. Data to be used can be a combination of images of the city, construction, transportation, industrial work and agriculture statistics and data of natural processes such as volcanic eruptions and wildfires.
At the end of research, we are expecting the conclude a correlation of air pollution level and the cities’ features and we hope research can propose a solution to reduce air pollution level this way.
