About

Adam Grant, organizational psychologist and Wharton professor, challenges the popular axiom: “good guys finish last.” DO good guys really finish last? Or first? Or does it make no difference? And how does generosity play out in real life in different industries and situations?

In Give and Take, Grant goes through different aspects of generosity, using stories and statistics to draw his conclusions. A highly interesting and inspirational book with many insightful stories. This book just might change your mind on what it means to be generous….and possibly your life.

Chapter 1: Good Returns

The Dangers and Rewards of Giving More Than You Get

Do good guys finish last?

There are 3 types of preferences for reciprosity (desired mix of taking/giving)

  1. Takers: want to get more than they give
  2. Givers: like to give more than they get
  3. Matchers: want an equal balance of giving and getting (tit for tat)

Most people act like givers in close relationships. But in the workplace, we are matchers.
