You don’t have to spend a lot of money to remind your girlfriend that you care. Truth is, little things are often what she cares about most. Big sweeping gestures don’t earn equally big brownie points. If there’s one thing you take away from this post, remember that romance is a game of frequency not magnitude. Keeping her happy means regular little gestures, not occasional grand gestures.

With these five date ideas your girlfriend will be swooning!

Date Idea #1. Make her work for it

Bet you’ve never tried a romantic “treasure hunt”? This idea won’t cost you a lot of money, but it does need advance planning. The idea is simple. You organise a series of clues that your girlfriend needs to solve to find you. While she’s figuring out the puzzle, you get to sit back and relax with cold beer. And when she arrives, you can tuck into a romantic dinner together, or some fancy pants cocktails.

Wikihow are doing it right. Just check out their post on how to plan a romantic treasure hunt.

In summary, you need to

1. Create a few unique clues or borrow the ideas below.
2. On your way to work, plant one or two of the clues.
3. Around lunchtime, message your girlfriend and offer to pick her up from work.
4. Just when she is expecting you, send her this message instead:

“Surprise! No, I’m not there yet or even around corner. Tonight I’ve planned something special… a romantic treasure hunt! Get ready for your first clue…”

Date Idea #2. Too busy at work, or just feeling lazy? Here’s an easier idea…

Like the first idea but with less mystery or adventure. And let’s be honest, much less effort. All you need to do is secretly prepare a picnic basket before she wakes up or after she’s gone to bed. Bonus if you don’t live together as you won’t need to creep around.

During the day, while your girlfriend is at work, send her a message to let her know you’ll be in the area when she finishes. Just keep it simple, but make sure you offer to travel home with her.

When you meet up with your girlfriend after work, don’t just blurt out the secret. Give her a handwritten card that reminds her why you love her. Let the card do the talking, telling her all about your special plans for tonight.

Date Idea #3. There’s a reason Casanova slept with so many women

Write a handwritten note in Italian telling your girlfriend about your plans to cook for her this evening. Don’t speak Italian? Neither do we…. but we know how to use Google Translate.

Get a courier to deliver the card to her at work along with some Italian treats like Canolli or Biscotti.

Your girlfriend will love this, trust us. Odds are that within about three nanoseconds every girl in the office will know how much of a HeroBoyfriend you are. If you’re unlucky, she works with someone who speaks Italian, in which case they will probably blow your cover. But don’t worry your language bad. Loveable are people is who not able to speak with the tongue of a mother.

Pick your girlfriend up from work as promised and go to the supermarket together. Even better if you have a local Italian grocer or deli. Buy some authentic ingredients together and a nice bottle of Italian vino. Montelpucciano, Chianti and Sangiovese are all great varieties!

Stuck for Italian recipe ideas? Here are some of our favourites. Best news is that they are all bloody easy to cook.

Charred cos, kalamata olives and tomato salad

Pasta with pork salsicce, fennel seeds and chilli

Lemon polenta cake with limoncello and citrus syrup

Date Idea #4. Paint a Pretty Picture

This idea involves both of you stretching your creative muscles together. If you have a shit boring job, which to be honest is most of us, you might enjoy this great release from the stress of work. And it’s a great escape from the kids, if you have them.

During your lunch hour, visit your nearest newsagent or office supplies store and buy two visual diaries. A visual diary is a large art book with thick blank paper. It’s perfect for sketching or painting. While you are at the newsagent, buy a few watercolour paints and paint brushes.

As the afternoon approaches, send your girlfriend a surprising text message. Let her know you’ll be picking her up from work (can you see a theme emerging?). When you arrive, she’ll be on to you straight away — those visual diaries are bloody hard to hide! Let her know that you’ve planned a little creative treat. Take a stroll or cycle to your favourite spot, and paint the landscape together. You could try pencils but watercolour paints are way more forgiving.

Be sure to pick up a bottle of wine and some snack food on the way. And don’t forget you’ll need a bit of water with you to mix with the paint.

Date Idea #5. Bloomin’ Happy Ending

You might know this, but most florists don’t just sell bouquets. They also sell bags of petals which are great for romantic gestures. The best part about this idea, is after you’ve bought the petals you don’t even need to leave the house. And if you do it right, there might just be a happy ending.

Beat your girlfriend home one day and sprinkle the petals from the front door all the way to the bedroom. Turn the lights off, queue Barry White’s greatest hits on Spotify, and don’t forget to light a few candles if you have them… If it’s cold, turn the heaters on.

When your girlfriend walks in the door, tell her you know how hard she’s been working and that tonight she’s in for a treat. Lead her into the bedroom and help her get out of her work clothes. Tonight she is getting a massage!
