Realtime scenario #2 (Related Topic — Self-Organizing Team)
A Development Team, arguing it is self-organizing, indicates it no longer needs the Daily Scrum; they collaborate throughout the day and they feel it has become a needless ritual.
My Take on it-
Self-organization can happen within certain boundaries and Scrum has defined its boundaries in terms of its roles, events, artifacts, and values.
If the team doesn’t want to have the daily scrum then as a Scrum Master I will facilitate a discussion to reiterate the purpose of this meeting.
Purpose — Daily scrum is a formal event where everyone in the development team is together and inspect the progress towards the sprint goal and how progress is trending toward completing the work in the Sprint Backlog
Then ask team members for their input about what could happen if they don’t meet daily to get aligned on their work, how they are planning for the next 24 hours, and how they are identifying their impediments timely?
The collaboration whole day is good but the purpose of everyone meeting daily is that the progress of work towards sprint goal and any adjustment required in the sprint backlog is transparent
If the team decides that daily scrum isn’t valuable will ask them what would need to change to make it valuable. And will use these ideas to come up with experiments that the team can carry out to try to improve their daily scrum facilitation and practices.
