Six things to let go of in 2024

Here we are at the beginning of another year. It’s a blessing to not only be able to look back on how far you’ve come, but it’s also a great time to reflect on different things you can do to elevate yourself. No matter how much time has passed or how much older you get, life is going to always continue to life, so it’s important to take a little introspection to live better and happier.

Here is a list of things I plan on letting go in the new year:

Doubting myself

There are plenty of times when I go after my goals and dreams, but I fall victim to thinking that sometimes I’m not good enough or perhaps not deserving enough. If I truly want to succeed, it’s important to have faith in myself and my capabilities.

Comparing myself to others

Ever since I got into my professional career, this has always been a difficult thing to shake. I constantly wonder why other people seem to get opportunities that I don’t get, which results in me feeling behind in life. Although everyone’s journey is different, I’m more than ready for my moment to shine.

Trying to do it all alone

You know how the saying goes, “If you want something done, do it yourself.” Although that saying is a solid perspective, I shouldn’t be afraid to ask for help if I truly need it.

A negative body image

I’m always up and down in terms of how I see myself in my body. There’s no doubt that I’ve gained weight, especially since the pandemic started back in 2020. However, even if I’m not always a fan of how I look physically, I should always be grateful for how this same body continues to keep me healthy, even if other people around me are dealing with viruses and illnesses. The plan is to do some type of activity daily, to make sure that I’m moving my body.

Guilt over past events

If I know that I’ve done something wrong in the past, even if I took accountability or apologized for my part, I’m prone to think about it days or months later. Sometimes I still feel guilty about the part I played in wrongdoing or hurting someone else. However, as long as I try to right my wrongs, I need to live with that and let the past be the past.

Friendships that no longer serve me

As a music lover, a lyric that always comes to mind is from Nipsey Hussle’s song “Victory Lap,” in which he says, “Circle got smaller, everybody can’t go.” When I think of that lyric, it reminds me that sometimes you’re only meant to be friends with someone for a season, like maybe they only came into your life to show you something or teach you a life lesson. There can be times when people simply grow apart, and maybe that friend isn’t bringing any quality or improvement to your life. At this point, I need to cultivate and embrace friends who are not only growing in life, but also advocate, support, and love me — and vice versa.

Here’s to a more fruitful and easy 2024. Let us know in the comments what things you plan on letting go of this year.
