Before we leap forward to the [new] roaring 20’s, let’s reminisce on the millennium’s teens.

1) The evolution of the meme

Oh, how far we’ve come. From the old school “happy bunny” meme to reusable gifs, this decade has reshaped internet humor and viral culture.

2) The rise of the remake

Feeling deja vu? We are too. This decade was all about remaking the classic movies and TV shows we grew up with. Proving: nostalgia sells.

3) Mariah Carey’s NYE performance (or lack thereof)

We all remember where we were when Mariah Carey gave up on her New Year’s Rockin’ Eve performance, and we will never forget. Ever.

4) TV streaming

Long gone are the days when TiVo-ing your favorite shows was revolutionary. Binge watch what you want, when you want. Praise be Netflix, HBO Go, and Hulu.

5) Influencer marketing

Where to begin? Selfies? Pyramid schemes? It’s all happening. And it’s all on Instagram. The 10’s made the “average person” a marketable brand.

6) Love in an app

Eharmony has gotten a run for their money this decade. Tinder, Bumble, and other similar apps have brought online dating to the social media realm.

7) Hamilton

Colonial America meets new-age hip-hop in this retelling of Alexander Hamilton’s story. The story, performed by a diverse cast, sold out during its off-Broadway premiere in 2015 and is still taking the world by storm half a decade later. We’re just thankful someone finally made a musical that doesn’t take place in the 50’s.

8) Game of Thrones

Whether or not you were an avid watcher, you knew about GoT. With 32.8 million viewers by season seven, Game of Thrones has become one of television’s most watched shows. Oh, and the Red Wedding. The damn Red Wedding. No one has ever been the same since!

9) Marginalized voices become heard

You name it: the Women’s March, “Me Too” movement, Dakota Access Pipeline, Black Lives Matter, Trans Visibility — this decade became a landmark period for activism. Of course it’s happened in the past, but the 2010’s showed anyone equipped with social media can have a voice and spark a viral movement.
