Ghouls, Ghosts, and Poltergeese. We remember Halloween. These are my picks to make your skin crawl* this October.

Classics Never Die

Creepshow (1982) [trailer]

Rotten Tomatoes score: 72%

Horror masters George Romero and Stephen King make Creepshow the best anthology movie out there. Things to look forward to:

  • A murdered father returns from the grave for his birthday cake
  • A good ol’ country boy, played by Stephen King himself, finds a strange meteorite
  • Ted Danson gets buried up to his neck on a beach
  • A janitor finds a monster in a crate
  • A germaphobe gets cozy with cockroaches

Every List Needs One Zombie Flick

The Return of the Living Dead (1985) [Clip]

Rotten Tomatoes score: 91%

The setting is Louisville, Kentucky. The movie follows a couple of workers in a medical supply warehouse who unwittingly unleash a zombie apocalypse on the unsuspecting town. And of course, punk rockers are involved–because it’s the 80s.

The movie that started the zombies-craving-brains trope delivers on scares, great special effects, and laughs.

Up the Tension

The House of the Devil (2009) [Trailer]

Rotten Tomatoes score: 87%

The perfect movie if you’re fond of being on edge from crippling anxiety and want to have trouble sleeping alone for a week. The House of the Devil revolves around a college student babysitting for the night in the middle of nowhere. She learns a dark family secret which sets everything in motion. The movie pays homage to horror films of the 1970s and 80s by claiming to be based on true events and using classic cinematography techniques.

Thrill Me

Green Room (2016) [Clip]

Rotten Tomatoes score: 90%

A punk band needs money to get home so they’re forced to organize a show at a neo-Nazi bar outside of Portland. Things don’t go as planned when one of the band members witnesses a murder. A gruesome horror movie that thriller fans will love.

My All Time Favorite

Cabin in the Woods (2012) [Trailer]

Rotten Tomatoes: 91%

This is the best horror movie of this century. Period. You’ll laugh. You’ll scream. You’ll have the best time. Honestly, the less you know about this going in, the better. It’s a movie that EVERYONE needs to see–even if you don’t enjoy horror movies. It’s a must.

What did I miss? Am I completely wrong? Too mainstream? Find me on Twitter at @voltronfutura and tell me how you couldn’t believe I didn’t mention the completely underrated Halloween III.

Goodnight, goodbye, and listen to Slayer.

What a weird saying ”make your skin crawl” is. It’s like when people say they want to be a fly on the wall. Like wut?
