Art and Faith at the Voroneț Monastery
On the list of World Heritage Sites
Voroneț Monastery has located 36 km from the city of Suceava, Romania, in the village of Voroneț, which today is part of the city of Gura Humorului.
Voroneț Monastery was built in 1488.
Legend has it that there was an old wooden church in that place, where Saint Daniil the Hermit lived. Tired of fighting the Ottoman Turks invaders, the Voivode of Moldova, Stephen the Great, sought out Saint Daniil the Hermit and asked him if he should continue the country’s defense struggle. Saint Daniil the Hermit advised him to continue the fight and predicted that he would win. That’s what happened.
In memory of the victory, Stephen the Great built the Voroneț monastery.
Saint Daniil the Hermit was buried in the monastery church, where a candle burns incessantly.
Voroneț Monastery consists of four places. These are the Church of Saint George, the ruins of some living rooms, the bell tower, and the enclosure wall.
The interior paintings mostly date from 1496.
