Sometimes the most beautiful creatures can be the most dangerous.
Origin
The Kelpie is an aquatic spirit of Scottish legend. The name itself derives from the Scottish Gaelic words “cailpeach” or “colpach”, meaning heifer or colt. You’re probably a little confused at the moment. I bet you’re wondering where this monster story is heading. You were probably expecting something of the aquatic type, but the Kelpie is mainly seen as a horse. Yes. I was a little taken aback by it too. Don’t worry!
This beautiful creature of a horse is mostly seen haunting the edges of rivers and lakes waiting on unsuspecting travelers to pass by. It then lures them in with its beauty and then takes them into the water with it. Unfortunately, other travelers are violently swept away by massive waves created by the Kelpie. If I was gonna go, I’d choose the first option.
You’re probably wondering why unsuspecting travelers would just follow a majestic horse into water and choose to drown. BUT! There is more to the Kelpie than just beauty. The hide or skin of the Kelpie is rather sticky. No. It’s very sticky. Most travelers passing by will see the Kelpie and walk over to pet it like they would any other horse and then tragically realize that they can’t pull their hand away.
