Reading vs. Listening
Preparation guidelines
It’s a preference. One of my children would prefer to listen as opposed to reading. Everyone has a preference. Why? It’s all about your attention span.
As a public speaker, you’re often asked to speak to this group or that. That’s fine, but how long do I have to make my point. So here’s my guideline for a verbal presentation.
Define Communication: The exchange of information Analysis: There is NO communication if the message sent was not understood or the sender did not communicate the message properly.
I learned one crucial lesson from all of the years I’ve spent serving as Chairman, President, CEO, or any combination thereof. COMMUNICATION is the most important issue to a company. Suppose you are talking between people, the company to the customer or client. Or the customer or client to the company and the list of variables goes on.
Then as I said in the beginning, some of us are audible learners, some of us learn well by reading. Others must have a more hands-on approach to education. Something the military calls OJT (on-the-job training).
Now let’s assume I need to speak and demonstrate the presentation with a PowerPoint and a prepared verbal presentation.
Have you determined the best way for you to communicate or learn? Again, understanding your attention span is critical.
