Veronica Yvette Bennett was born in East Harlem on August 10, 1943. She died on January 12, 2022. She formed the trio girl group The Ronettes and was known professionally as Ronnie Spector.

Ronnie’s group was her elder sister, Estelle Bennet, and their cousin, Nedra Talley. They were signed to Phil Spector’s Philles label, which produced the majority of their recording output. The Ronettes had a string of hits in the 1960s, including “Be My Baby” (1963), “Baby I Love You” (1963), “The Best Part of Breakin’ Up” (1964), and “Walking In The Rain” (1964).

Ronnie was known as the bad girl of rock ‘n roll, but she stopped performing during her marriage to Spector until they separated in 1972.

The Ronettes got together again. She released her debut solo album “Siren” in 1980. Her career blossomed again when she was featured on Eddie Money’s song “Take Me Home Tonight” in 1986. She went on to release six more albums.

In 1990, Ronnie published a memoir “Be My Baby: How I Survived Mascara, Mini Skirts, and Madness, Or, My Life As A Fabulous Ronette”.

In 2007 Ronnie was inducted into The Rock and Roll Of Fame as a member of the Ronettes.

Here is a wonderful rendition of Be My Baby. Listen to the drummer.
