The Last Voyage of the Demeter, Universal Pictures (2023)

First, I’ll say that if you like vampire movies, you’ll probably like this one. On the other hand, to me, if you’ve seen one vampire movie, you’ve seen — well… most of them.

From my understanding, this movie is based on one chapter from Bram Stoker’s Dracula. I may have read the book years ago, but I don’t think I did. I read Frankenstein, but that’s not what we’re talking about here.

In the movie, the image of Dracula hearkens back to early black-and-white films. No, not the romantic, pale, white guy. The bald, ugly, pointy-eared one, like in the 1922 silent film Nosferatu.

The Last Voyage of the Demeter had a decent amount of horror and suspense but also included the stupidity that characters in most horror movies seem to possess. The only time anyone tried to escape was at night, which was when Dracula came out to kill. After seeing a couple of crew members burned up in sunlight, that might’ve given them a clue.

Here’s a thought: escape during the daylight! Now, the movie might have portrayed the book accurately — I can’t say. Perhaps the characters in the novel were just as dim-witted. The reason I don’t care for most vampire movies is the predictability. In this one, you could tell…
