Monks drop out of society together to live together in a counter-cultural way. But why? (Spoiler alert: it’s all about love.)

The bells chime. It’s 4:50 — time, once again, for mass. Sunlight streams through stained glass. I walk across colors spilling over the stone as I make my way to my place around the altar, my simple red chair.

We’re a little family gathered around the table for a sacred meal.

The rhythm of this life is measured out slowly. In prayers. Shared meals. Quiet labor.

The focus of it all

At the center of our life is God, who we believe is love itself (1 John 4:16). This love — a mysterious divine power — has called us to our seats today. It binds us together and guides our every action.

Love is the focus of all we do.

But why then, you might ask, do we choose to live apart from the world?

We live apart because we humbly realize that in this life, there are many things that can interfere with love. Take, for example, money.
