Women in Tech: Santander’s commitment to gender equality in technology

Santander’s Technology and Operations (T&O) team is committed to diversity and inclusion. Four years ago, we launched the Women in Tech initiative, included in the Be Tech! with Santander recruitment plan, and since then we have developed different actions focused on changing the existing stereotypes in the STEM sector.

Only 1 in 4 positions in the tech sector is held by a woman 👩‍💻. This figure has remained stable for more than 10 years. When we go to universities or even basic education 👩‍🎓, this difference is already noticeable. In high school, the presence of girls in scientific and technical branches is consistently lower. If we look at the university, the rates of women out of the total in STEM degrees show figures where we still see a big difference: Mathematics (36% women), Physics (27%), Telecommunications (23%), and Computer Science (13%).*

Women in Tech: our main lines of actions

Visibility of women’s leadership 👀

One of our main initiatives is the annual event “The Future of Women in Tech Summit”, which we organize from Santander together with MongoDB, and for which we are already preparing for its fourth edition in 2024. This event is a key platform to see the reality of leading companies in their sectors and to address the challenges and opportunities faced by women in the industry.

We promote the creation of role models 👧

Recently, we launched the Digital Girls Santander Club, which aims to inspire and empower girls to explore the world of technology from a young age. This club was born from the collaboration with Technovation Girls and already has more than 200 participants in the first pilot.

We strongly believe that technology is a means to help society at large thrive. By teaching from the earliest age how technology can solve real day-to-day problems, we can cultivate a community that is more diverse and ready to lead the future.

A step further in our commitment 🏃

In collaboration with ESADE, we have carried out a study that highlights the importance of supporting equal opportunities in the field of technology. This study provides a detailed overview of the current situation and gender gaps in the field of technology in Spain, underlining the need for concrete actions to promote inclusion and diversity.

You can download the full study (only available in Spanish) here 👇:

At Santander, we are committed to continuing to drive change and create an environment where everyone has the same opportunities.
