Simplify your life. Don’t waste the years struggling for things that are unimportant. Don’t burden yourself with possessions. Keep your needs and wants simple and enjoy what you have. Don’t destroy your peace of mind by looking back, worrying about the past. Live in the present. Simplify! Henry David Thoreau.

A lot of people can rarely differentiate their needs from their wants.

To quickly determine the difference between a want and need. Think of a need to be something required for survival. Needs are water for drinking, food to eat, clothing to keep you warm, and shelter to live in. In other words, a need is to have an absolute requirement for.

On the other hand, a want is everything else. Wants are there to make life a little more enjoyable. Wants are something you wish for or your desire for something. I want a customized Rolex watch.

Our need doesn’t really change over time. But our want keeps changing constantly because as humans, our wants are insatiable.

Some items are needs, but many of the things we buy are actually wants. And, confusing your wants with needs may be causing you a lot of financial stress.

Before you buy something, you should stop and think about whether the item is a want or a need.

You should ask yourself these three questions:

Do I need this to survive?

Why do I need or want this item?

Do I already have something similar?

By first asking yourself these questions, you’ll waste less money and even prevent clutter from taking over your life.

The problem most people face is the fact that they tend to place their wants and need together.

We live in a world where more, more, more, and more is been preached to us. Because we are never happy with what we have, we want what others have too. We want to have more than everyone else. It is this kind of thinking that goes on to confuse people by placing their wants and needs together.

But the truth is we are unlikely to have a good and meaningful life unless we can overcome our insatiability.

If you address a need, you create a purpose for yourself.

Understanding what your needs are, helps you create a simple living lifestyle. And trying to reduce your wants is a great way to remove desire and temptation in your life. The less you want, the more content you can be.

When you learn to make better choices between your wants and needs, it will help you stay out of debt and reach financial freedom sooner. And learning how to control your spending will help you for years into the future, even as your income grows.

To simplify your life, focus on your needs, and cut down on your wants.
