The Movie Paterson Teaches Us How to Fight the Dullness of Life

Paterson is a 2016 film starring Adam Driver in the role of Paterson, a bus driver living in Paterson, New Jersey. He lives in a modest house with his lovely wife Laura (Golshifteh Farahani) and a grouchy bulldog Marvin.

Besides supporting his wife’s quirks and driving the bus, Paterson also writes poems inspired by his everyday life.

You can actually see the verses of his poems — while he creates and recites them in his head — appearing on the screen. I found this a very nice touch.

Paterson lives what it would seem a repetitive life: he wakes up early at the same hour, goes to work and drives the bus for the same routes, comes back home, walks the dog, and every night grabs a beer at the local pub. The film portrays a week of Paterson’s life and we see this exact routine during his working days. His life could be the same as the one of any average person.

You always hear that life isn’t a movie, but this is quite the exception that proves the rule.

For this reason, the film takes a slow pace and it could give the impression that nothing happens. Most people would define it “boring” because, like life, is defined by…
